What distortion is doing

Distortion is most useful when you decide what should remain direct and what should be transformed. For guitar, that decision is more important than copying a fixed pedalboard order. Start with a clean input, listen for the problem the effect solves, and change one stage at a time.

For this topic, the useful target is tight high-gain saturation. High-pass before heavy gain and trim the amp gain before reaching for more distortion.
